Choosing Granite Countertops Over Other Countertops
With so many types of countertops on the market today, the task of choosing one can seem overwhelming. It is important to keep in mind that the kitchen is one of the most used rooms in the house, often the heart of the home where people gather to sit, eat, and talk. In the kitchen, countertops are the most used item and if you have the right countertops, not only will they be functional but they will be aesthetically pleasing and last a life time. Granite, a natural stone, is the perfect choice in kitchen countertops.

A countertop should be easy to care for, durable, and attractive. Countertops made of granite can actually increase the value of the home by as much as 10%. However, there are many choices of countertops on the market today, so it is important to know what is available and why your choice of granite is the best.

There are many countertop options available today:

Laminate: This popular and inexpensive countertop is easily replaced and comes in a large variety of colors and patterns, often following current trends. People looking for a quick fix for their kitchens are able to often install these themselves. With the easy of installation and low cost come some concerns. Laminate cracks easily, is not durable, cannot withstand high heat, scratches, and can be difficult to repair. Although it will last years, it will not last a life time.

Butcher Block: Often the choice in commercial kitchens, this countertop has a natural beauty but is shows wear and tear. It is easily cut, scratched, nicked and is sensitive to humidity. It is not recommended that is be installed near dishwashers and sinks because of the changes in humidity. Spills needs to be cleaned up quickly so they do not absorb into the wood.

Ceramic Tile: These counter tops have interesting texture and designs. They endure high temperatures, resist staining, are difficult to scratch, and can be installed by homeowners. The downfall to ceramic tile is that they chip easily and that the grout between the tiles is easily stained. If the tiles are glossy, scratches show up more easily.

Stainless Steel: A very sleek and ultra modern look, this countertop is durable, stain resistant, withstands high temperatures, is impervious to water, and easy to clean. However, it has one look and one look only: ultra modern.

Granite: Granite countertops provide all of the advantages of other countertops while adding value and uniqueness to the home. Granite is the favorite choice of serious chefs. The easy to clean and durable surface allows chefs to utilize the countertops directly. They are excellent for rolling out dough and hot pots and pans can be placed directly on them with no need for hot pads. Glasses left on the counters won't cause water stains since granite is impervious to water stains. There are over 3000 varieties of colors, textures, and patterns of granite. Nature is the true artist here and installing granite is like installing a piece of art in your home. You will never walk into someone's home and find the exact same piece of granite. Granite is like snowflakes with no two pieces being the same.

A home is an expression of you. You want to choose something that will that a lifetime, add value to your home, and be durable. Granite countertops bring nature inside and allow you to enjoy it's beauty as well as the easy and versatility it provided in the heart of your home.
